This second voyage into The Underwater World of Trout answers the questions all anglers ask: Where are they? Why are they there? What are they eating? How do I recognize what is going on? In this study we go into the streams and examine the facts and get real answers. Some you expect, others you won’t believe until you see them yourself.

To understand what a trout’s world is like requires a basic understanding of how water moves (hydrology) and how trout move about in the water (biomechanics). We all know some basic truths — or do we? Water always flows downstream — except when it doesn’t. Trout always face upstream — except when they don’t. Trout use the tail fin for propulsion — but how do they stop? Trout feed primarily in pools and use fast water to hide from predators — or do they? Trout always establish a pecking order and never tolerate other fish in their feeding lie — except when they do. You’ll be surprised how often some basic truths are violated.

How trout rise offer clues to what they are eating. But have you ever had a chance to observe the difference between a trout taking an emerger, sipping a dun, tilting on a nymph or exploding after a skittering caddis? Thanks to a particularly co-operative rainbow trout, all the different rise forms and takes are captured and made clear.

These are not staged shots in aquariums but real trout in the streams that you and I fish. These are the waters we ply, filmed by an angler who asks the questions we all ponder. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Stacey, their three children, and two dogs. They fish primarily in Idaho and Montana.

I've Never Met an Idiot on the Water - Henry Winkler Book

MY TAKE: I really liked this book. It made me laugh and it didn’t take itself too seriously. If you like fishing or anything Henry Winkler’s done like being the Fonz on Happy Days or producing MacGyver…you’ll like this book too!

CatchemCaro Crank Bait Henrietta Deep Diver

This is a huge crankbait, cellphone for comparison. This bait will dive 8 to 12 feet.

CatchemCaro baits are completely custom, hand-made from poplar wood and dressed with all stainless steel hardware. The lips are hand made from Polycarbonate and each bait is hand painted and protected with two coats of an epoxy clear coat finish. Each bait is tested by CatchemCaro owner Rich Caro at Spring Lake, CA near his home, to ensure they all run true before being packed to ship all over the globe.

The Henrieta Deep Diving Crank Bait was designed and first produced by Rich Caro in July 2010. The bait is named after Rich’s grandmother. Each bait is hand painted with 12 different colors and protected with two coats of epoxy clear coat. Each bait is tank tested and trued so they run as designed. These crankbaits come in four different size lips, two round lips and two coffin lips:

100 series medium round lip dives 4 to 8 feet.
200 series large round lip dives 8 to 12 feet.
300 series small coffin lip dives 6 to 10 feet.
400 series large coffin lip dives 10 to 14 feet.

Rich uses a 7 foot medium/heavy action rod with 10 to 25lb test line. These big baits catch big fish so always be sure to have your drag set correctly. The Henrieta is 5.5″ long, 3/4″ wide and 2″ tall, sports 3d eyes, 2/0 VMC hooks, 40lb snap rings and stainless steel hardware.
