Memorial Day Weekend 2011 Fishing Report

Started fishing at 5am. The water temp was 70degrees, there was heavy cloud cover until about 10am when the sun burned everything off, then it got HOT. Lots of fish on the surface gulping flies, unfortunately we didn’t have anything with us to imitate that. We flat line trolled around some usual spots pulling live herring. We had two hits and no hookups so we decided to drift on the bottom. We caught our first laker at 9am at 99 feet, than another about an hour later at 79 feet and the last at 105 feet in the south tower channel, everything on live herring.

We had enough with the trout and moved into the park ranger’s cove to fish for some bass. The area is swarming with life. We saw sunfish, bluegills, largemouth, a perch, the big snapping turtle pictured below as well as a pod of carp that were cruising all over the place. We threw every lure imaginable at these fish, but it was pretty clear that we saw them, and they saw us and were having none of it… all except for one bluegill that a impaled itself on a phoebe minnow.

Here’s the video I got of one of the big carp. There were 5 carp in all and they were back there the whole time in the same area. Read all about the common carp on wikipedia.

Castaic Swimbait – Rainbow Trout

I have seen massive largemouth bass swimming around in Round Valley and I have no doubt they are eating the little rainbow trout NJ DEP stocked earlier this month. I present you the Castaic Catch 22 Swimbait. The below model is a 6inch rainbow trout imitation. The reason this bait is called a “catch 22″ is because the lure manufacturer guarantees you’ll catch 22 bass before the lure becomes unfishable OR you get a free replacement lure.

Norman DD22 Crankbait

I really like using Norman Lures DD22
baits in the red / black / crayfish colors and fishing them between weed beds and over sudden bottom depth changes at Round Valley. You have to be careful because the lures dive deep (anywhere from 10 to 20 feet depending on the length of your cast), but this is also their big advantage over say a traditional crankbait that only goes down 6-8 feet.

The Norman DD22 goes where most bass fisherman don’t so I love using it in deep lakes and reservoirs like Round Valley.

Weight: 5/8 oz.
Length: 3″

Depth: 10-20 ft.

Memorial Day Weekend Recipe – Grilled Catfish Over Chipotle Slaw

Metropolitan Seafood - Hunterdon County NJ

South Western Spicy Grilled Catfish over a Chipotle Slaw

Hmmm…let me think how can I get more Cerveza in my diet and not seem like I’m a problem drinker? Got it…make this spicy @** kicking south of the border dish and claim I’m just trying to cool my palette down…yeah, that’ll work. Note: if you find this dish too spicy please perform “I’m a little tea pot” at the table.

Serves 4
For the Catfish
¼ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
The juice of 2 limes
1 teaspoon of lime zest
3 large cloves garlic, minced
3 large shallots, minced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 bunch cilantro, leaves only, finely chopped
4 each 6 to 8 ounce portions of Catfish. This recipe is also great with Snapper, Grouper, Salmon or even Shrimp
Olive oil for brushing grill
Lime wedges, for garnish
Sour cream for a cooling garnish
For the Slaw
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 carrot, shredded
1 onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 chipotle in Adobo or more if your feeling the heat vibe…yes these are available at Metro I also use them as breathe fresheners
2 teaspoons chopped fresh cilantro
1/3 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons white sugar
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste

How it’s done
In a small mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, salt, cayenne pepper, lime juice, lime zest, garlic, shallots, cumin, and about 3/4 of the cilantro (reserve the remaining cilantro for garnish).

Place the Catfish fillets in a large glass pie dish or ceramic container. Pour the marinade over the Catfish. Make sure the fillets are evenly coated on both sides and marinate for 1 hour in the refrigerator, turning once.

Meanwhile in a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, carrot, onion, red pepper, chipotle and cilantro. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, sugar, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Pour over vegetable mixture and toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour.

Preheat gas grill to high heat. Brush grill clean with wire brush and rub with a little olive on some bunched up paper towels. Grill the Catfish for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until done to your liking. Plate Slaw into four dishes and place Catfish on top garnish with Cilantro, lime wedges and a dollop of sour cream. Don’t use low fat…have a Corona light instead.

NJ State Record Grass Carp Caught at Curlis Lake

Not caught at Round Valley, but worth mentioning a new NJ state record fish. The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed that a Grass Carp caught by James Dempsey, Jr of Ewing New Jersey on May 12, 2011 is officially a new state record. The huge fish was taken from Curlis Lake in Mercer County and weighed an astounding 55 lbs. 8 oz., surpassing the previous record set in 2008 by Homer Tye by one pound, one ounce. That record fish was also from Curlis Lake.
