Hit the water at 6:30am. I usually launch from the dirt ramp, but the water is so low ~10feet?, that it looked like I might get stuck in the mud if I did.
Drove back around to the cement ramp… not much better. Who cares, we’re fishing.
First fish on at 7:30am. 18.5 inch Rainbow Trout caught via flat line trolling a big live herring. You can see my 3 pole setup behind me.
The surface water temperature was 74 degrees. The air temp was about 60, hence the jacket. About an hour later we decided to drift along the bottom in about 60feet of water and came up with this 19.5 inch laker. This fish fought like a 24+ incher. I was shocked when it came up.
Caught again using live, big, herring. Headed home at noon (the bite died at 9am). Here’s what i get to grill for labor day!

Two nice looking trout.
I was out this AM (Tuesday 9/7). I hit the water at 630AM. I tried flat-line trolling in the North Tower area and also the South Tower area. I did not have live herring so I tied on a Dare Devil (bright gold and greenish)on one rig and a small trout colored Rapala on the other. I fished each behind a 5 foot flouro leader and 1 oz sinker and I estimate I was about 50 foot deep or more. I was trolling as so as my 9.9 would go…pretty slow. I fished until 11AM and did not catch anything. Sounds like I need to go to the live herring for more success.
Do you guys ever have any luck without the live bait?
Correction below…South Dam…not South “Tower”!
I tried over by the South Dam that day also, with no luck.
In my experience, live herring outperforms everything in the Summer. In the fall and winter I’ve had success with lures just like you mentioned.
By the way, I had to travel all the way to Lake Hopatcong the night before to get the herring (Dows). I have a phone number on the bait page.
